  • The city is famous for the Reading Railroad (for example, it appears as a space in the Monopoly board game).
  • Reading is located at the foot of Mount Penn, which dominates the skyline.
  • At the top of Mount Penn, along its scenic drive and overlooking the city is a distinctive pagoda, known locally as "The Pagoda" or otherwise as the "Reading Pagoda".
  • The city is also famous for its development of outlet shopping as a tourist industry, giving it the designation "The Original Outlet Capital of the World." There are more than 100 outlet stores, including those at the historic VF Outlet Village.
  • The Fifth Avenue candy bar was named for a street in Reading. A replica of the candy bar's distinctive logo and packaging is used as the street sign in the city.
  • Reading is also known as the "Pretzel Capitol of the World," where one plant alone can package over 10 million pretzels per day. The modern age of pretzel making began in 1935 when the Reading Pretzel Machinery Company first introduced the automatic pretzel twisting machine. This innovation made pretzels available to people in all parts of the country, and helped the fledgling industry grow.
